Yoga Sutra study group – an experiment in peer learning

Yoga Sutra study group – an experiment in peer learning

Cheryl Blamey writes about a small group that is pursuing sutra study in the heart of the New Forest

How often, after an inspiring and informative IST day, do we go home with great intentions to review the subject matter, and follow it up with regular personal study to deepen our knowledge and practice? And then ¬3 file away our notes, rarely to be seen again? Without the external structure of a course, the tapas of pursuing such a path is incredibly hard to apply.

It was with this awareness, at an Alastair Shearer day on Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, that the idea was conceived of a study sangha that would meet monthly for mutual support in achieving this goal. The composition of the group has changed over the three years we’ve been meeting – some members have dropped out, others have joined – but incredibly we have maintained the momentum, and only rarely miss a month due to low numbers. At present, there are six dedicated members and another couple who come occasionally; attendance is usually between four and six people.

We are always looking for new members, so if you would like to deepen your relationship with the Sutras please join us on the second Sunday of the month between 10.30am – 12.30pm, in the New Forest.

Using various translations and commentaries for support, we look at a group of sutras in each meeting, exploring the meaning of key words and concepts, and often touching on the relevance of the teachings for our own lives. Guided by an experienced chanter or using a ‘listen and repeat’ CD, we also chant the section of the Sanskrit text that we’re discussing.

Despite the seriousness of our objective, the meetings are always informal and fun. Currently we’re working our way through chapter three, and it is perfectly feasible for new members to join in at this point.
