A look at the Chakras
The Sanskrit word chakra signifies a wheel and here we take it to mean a moving wheel or vortex of energy which manifests along the length of the spine up to the crown of the head. The principal chakras are seven in number and may correspond to the colours of the spectrum.
The sixth chakra is Ajna literally meaning 'to know, to perceive'. It suggests the power of observation and interpretation .
In Tantra Yoga, the specific associations of Ajna are:
Colour: Indigo Function: Perception
Sound: Om Inner State: Self mastery
Ajna chakra is located at the brow, just above the bridge of the nose. It is associated with the Third Eye, which when active may be opened to the intellect and psychic awareness. Ajna chakra conveys wisdom, knowledge and right understanding.
Ajna chakra may be activated by practice of asanas which work on Muladhara chakra; these are at the ends of the same axis. Muladhara conveys the sense of being safely grounded while Ajna opens to the higher mental qualities. Visualisations and affirmations can be effective in working with Ajna.
For example, sit comfortably cross legged, with the attention directed to the third eye centre between the eyebrows. When the breath is settled, use an affirmation such as "I accept my wisdom and my understanding of reality."
Asanas which may help to awaken Vishuddi chakra include Bridge pose and Shoulderstand. The latter may not be appropriate for everyone, but can be adapted using props e.g. a wall, a chair and bolsters.
